Mind the Gap - Define Your Viable
/I seldom weed my garden - it does it’s own thing and we co-exist happily together. The paths, however, are a different thing. And today, I spend some time weeding my paths.
I once told a friend that I was a gardener of paths. She thought that I was making light of my gardening abilities, but I was serious. I love paths - and all the metaphors and possibilities that they hold.
Most of my garden paths are made from flagstones that I unearthed over time and lovingly assembled in various configurations. Flagstones are like puzzle pieces - arranged in a certain way they feel as if they were designed exactly for that spot. I never seal the flagstones. I like the option to move them if I choose; a spurious sense of control. As the garden grows I shift the flagstones to allow the garden plants to bloom where they wanted to grow.
In business, most people will focus on the flagstones. They will use them as stepping stones to following a predestined direction to where they think they want to be.
I like to focus on the gaps - the spaces in between, where seeds fall and germinate, set down roots and bloom despite the odds. The gaps between my flagstones have become the most fertile nursery for daisies, coneflowers, red clover, black-eyed susans and so much more. The ideas that take root also bring me the most pleasure.
While I weed my paths, (actual and metaphorical), I ponder and ideas begin to flow. Some take root and some get uprooted. The ideas that grow in the gaps are often my best ideas because they come not from where I think I should be or what I think I should do, but from the heart. They are ideas that have grit and determination and resonate in a time and space of their own choosing.
I think for many gardeners the plants growing in places other than where they were intended to grow become weeds. It’s all in the perspective.
